Composed of both the Greek mainland and more than 1,400 islands and islets, the nation of Greece lures visitors from across the globe to experience its unique mix of ancient history and modern sensibilities. Hundreds of archaeological and historical sites dot this primarily mountainous landscape, which is surrounded by the deep blue of the Aegean, Ionian and Mediterranean Seas.
Known as the “cradle of modern civilization,” the capital city of Athens is the birthplace of democracy, the sciences and philosophy. The world-famous Parthenon—the ancient temple dedicated to the city’s namesake goddess—still stands on the ruins of the Acropolis, providing a dramatic view from at the highest point in the city. Built in the 4th century B.C., the Roman Stadium, which once hosted the Panathenaic athletic contests, was restored to welcome the first modern Olympic Games in 1895. The Arch of Hadrian was built in 132 A.D. to honor the Roman Emperor of the same name, as well as to commemorate the consecration of the Temple of Olympian Zeus.
In the middle of the Aegean Sea lies the Greek island of Santorini. The striking village of Oia sits atop a stunning cliff—openly showcasing the beauty of the town’s simple, whitewashed walls and vibrant blue domes. A daunting set of 300 steps leads visitors down the cliff face to the small port of Ammoudi, where small boats ferry guests across the water to the island of Thirassia. On the eastern side of the island, black beaches soak up the warm sun, while the famous Red Beach is a somewhat quieter area covered with black and red volcanic rocks.
One of the most popular of the Greek isles is Mykonos, also found in the Aegean. The pulsating rhythms and infectious energy of its active nightlife—with a venue for every preference and persuasion—invites comparisons to the excesses of Spain’s Ibiza.
Another famous island, and the largest one belonging to the country, is Crete. The city of Chania, which is the largest town in western Crete, features traditional old quarters, quaint colorful houses, and scenic flowered gardens. Meanwhile, Crete’s urban center is found in its capital, Heraklion. There, tourist activities and exciting nightlife abound, and rich cultural events are held throughout the city each summer.
