From the mountains of the Alps in the south to the shores of the North and Baltic Seas, the landscape of Germany unfolds like the pages of a fairytale. Perched high above a small baroque town in Upper Bavaria, the picturesque Burghausen Castle includes drawbridges, banqueting halls, and even a witches’ tower. Farther north lies Kaiserburg Castle in Nuremberg, which was home to all of the kings and emperors of the Holy Roman Empire from 1050 to 1571. And in the far east, the impregnable Königstein Fortress still sits on a rock plateau overlooking the River Elbe.
On October 12, 1810, Prince Ludwig of Bavaria invited all the citizens of Munich to a royal party and horse race in celebration of the future king’s marriage to Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen… and thus was born Oktoberfest. The horse race was abandoned long ago, but the celebration continues—and continues to grow—every year.
While nearly 40,000 guests attended the original day of festivities, Oktoberfest has expanded to a 16-day celebration with millions of party-goers in attendance. Today, beer and food take center stage, along with an agricultural show that is featured every three years. And it all takes place on the very site of the first Oktoberfest—Theresienwiese, or “Theresa’s Fields,” named for the prince’s bride.
The many beautiful waterways of Germany afford a unique way to explore and enjoy the Bavarian scenery. River cruises along the Rhine, Moselle, Danube and Elbe allow guests to spend hours, days or even weeks aboard various sightseeing tours. Most include stops at historic towns, ancient castles and classic vineyards. The dramatic “Rhine in Flames” event takes place all summer long along the Middle Rhine River Valley, with a fabulous fireworks display ignited in the sky and mirrored in the waters
