The history of the Czech Republic spans more than 1,000 years. The capital city of Prague, known as the “City of One Hundred Towers,” encompasses four residential quarters dating back to the Middle Ages… each considered to be a national heritage monument. The city showcases architecture of every style, from Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque, to Art Nouveau and Cubist.
The dramatic Prague Castle was originally built in the 11th century as a Romanesque basilica, later becoming an imperial residence during the reign of King Charles IV and now serving as the seat of the President of the Czech Republic. The romantic ruins of ancient castles dot the countryside, including rock castles and gothic castles from the 14th and 15th centuries.
The Castle Road, or Burgenstrasse, is a scenic route stretching from Prague to Mannheim, Germany, taking travelers on a tour of 13 Czech locations that offer a cross-section of the country’s remarkable centuries’ worth of architecture. In addition to the guided tours available at many of the Czech Republic’s castles and chateaus, guests can enjoy nighttime tours, international music festivals… even medieval-style tournaments and feasts.
Architectural beauty on a more modest scale is found in folk architecture throughout the country. Characterized by crisp, light-colored faces complemented by earth-toned trim and roofs, its beauty is found in its clean simplicity. The village of Holašovice in South Bohemia with its rustic Baroque style, and the villages of the Chodsko area in West Bohemia serve as picturesque examples.
The scenic countryside of Southern Moravia is the Czech Republic’s noted wine region. Wine lovers and cycling enthusiasts find a unique way to tour the area—with a network of bike paths that wind between the vineyards. The trails are clearly marked and range in length from the 14-mile Bzenec winery trail to the full-length Moravian wine trail that stretches a daunting 173 miles.
